The Telemedicine Laboratory of UOC (from now on, LabTM) is a initiative included in the Heath Science Program of the International Graduate Institute of UOC, in fact, within the Master studies in Telemedicine, and has the direct support and interest of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and others institutions related to ICT applications to Telemedicine practice. The LabTM is a virtual platform developed with Web 2.0 technology that allows access to different telemedicine applications through Information System (enabling or mirror), which are enabled in different health institutions. There are three goals clearly identified: Educational Area, the Research Area and the Advise Scientific Area, which are connected with each other. A first specific application of the Educational Area will be the Telemedicine’s Master Course. Through it, the students will be confronted to real telemedicine experiences, covering from clinical management to public health usages, disease surveillance, personal health, cultural changes, organizational changes, policy models and telemedicine technology. So the LabTM will provide virtual training as a practical tool to complement the Master studies in Telemedicine. The research Area at the LabTM focuses on running experimental approaches at different levels of maturity, allowing the discussion, critical appraisal and picturing the ‘state-of-the-art’ of the research in the field. More importantly, it will support the development of professional networks at regional, national, and international level, linked to health educational area and health institutions to share and spread good practice in telemedicine, integrating experiences and knowledge learned as well as tools and methodologies. Finally, the Dissemination Area will be an innovative functionality of the LabTM with the goal to simulate a real integration of a Telemedicine system and being able to perform an evaluation “as if” the situation was the real one. This could facilitate the adoption of decision by managers at health institutions, provide recommendations and action plans to increase the chances of successful service deployment.
